This sthala Emperumaan, Kaatkarai Appan is worshipped by the people treating him as the Amsam of Vaamanar. They take a very big utsavam for this perumal during the Onam festival.
Kerala is famous for Bananas and especially for a particular typed by named “Nenthiram”. This banana has a closer relationship with this sthala perumal. Once, a bhaktar (devotee) of the perumal, had a big land where the banana trees are planted. But, it doesn’t give him any yield and doesn’t give him any bananas. The devotee at that felt, that it might be some wrong thing he might have done and as a result of this only, the trees are not giving him the proper yield. So, he decided, the sight of the perumal fell on banana trees and from that time, it gave him lots of yield. Seen by the Kaatkarai appan’s Nethira eyes, the yield was very high and because of this, the bananas are named as “Nethiram Pazham”.
The Golden bananas which are dedicated towards Kaatkarai appan lost one day and the king on hearing this, blamed for the lost on a Yogi, who doesn’t know anything about it. He punished the yogi and treated him badly. But, the golden bananas were found inside the Garbhagriham of Moolavar sannadhi. On knowing this, the Yogi got angry and gave the sabham for the time, since he was caught as the thief only because of the time and after giving the sabham, he suicided and dead. But, his soul doesnt leave the world but it turned into a Brahma Raatshasan and roamed in the world. To get out of the Sabham, as suggested by himself (the Yogi who is in the form of the Raatshasan), constructed a bamboo roof and destroyed it using the fire in this sthalam and thereby from the bright fire that comes out from the bamboo would ride away the sabham of the Yogi. After this, they all did the same thing suggested by the Yogi to rid away the curse known as sabham. As a result of this, a small temple was constructed for the Yogi and daily poojas are done to make him cool. This is one of the purana (older) history told about this sthalam.
Kaatkarai Appan gave his prathyaksham for Kapila munivar. Kapila munivar was born as as the son for Karthama Prasapathi and Devabhoothi and he is said to be the amsam of Vishnu. He explained the Gnana thathuvam for his mother itself. He was given space to do his daily Tapas by the Sea Lord known as Samuthira rajan.
Once, Indiran grabbed the horse of Sakaraas and tied the horse behind the hut of Kapila muni. Thinking that Kapila muni has made a theft of taking the horse towards himself, the Sakaraas blammed upon Kapila muni. But, on hearing the blaming words from them, he got angry and made them into ash by his firing vision. After this, Bakeerathan, got the Ganga water from Lord Shiva and poured on the ash of Sakaraas to make them to get the mukthi. Having this kind of greatness person is Kapila muni, who was given the prathyaksham of the perumalMoolavar:
The Moolavar of this sthalam is Kaatkarai Appan. Moolavar is in Nindra Kolam facing his thirumugham along the south direction. Prathyaksham for Kapila munivar.

Swami Ramanujar dedicated Nammazhvar’s Thiruvaymozhi pasuram “oru nAyagam” (4.1) to this kshetram.

presiding Deity:

Sri Yoga Narasimha (hill top), Sri ThiruNarayana (Main Deity), Sri Yadugiri Nayika (Divine Consort), Sampath Kumaran (Processional Deity) and Sri Ramanujacharya – (The image approved by Himself-Thaan vuhantha thiru meni )

ThiruNarayanapuram is also called Yadavadri, Yadushaila, and Melukote. It is located in the present Mysore/Karnataka district.  This small town’s hub of activity is its temple. Although this holy place had been mentioned in the Puranas at various instances, it really came to formal existence with the coming of our great acharya Swamy Sri Ramanuja.  This town was the place where Sri Ramanuja resided for 12 years after he and his disciples left Sri Rangam due to the local fanatical chieftains at that time.

Of all of the places where Sri Ramanuja resided, Melukote was particularly dear to his heart; so much so, that he stated that he would place his very spirit in the processional image that bears an exact likeness to him, and instructed all of his disciples to make an effort to reside here.  In His last message before leaving this earth, he instructed his devotees to live in Melukote for some period of time in their lives, even if it were to be in a small little house.

Melukote is a place where people glorify Sri Ramanuja as the King of Ascetics, the King of Philosophers, the King the Vedas awaited, and the Father of the divine child Sampath Kumaran (Chelva Pillai-the dear darling child).  Despite its appearance as a sleepy little town, the temple and town is home for many learned Vedic Scholars.

Sri Vaishnava tradition with Sri Ramanuja as its central focus and most important acharya, explains the important relationship of this Great Soul with his beloved child, Sri Sampath Kumaran.  It is understood that Sriman Narayana is the Only Being in this Universe that is Truly Independent, i.e., His Actions and His Will is not limited by the bounds of karma, as it is with every other soul.  But, since His Very Nature is Love and Compassion, He is under the sway of those who love him, and to Great Souls like Sri Ramanuja, He becomes like their own child, much in the same way in which He allowed Himself to become Nandagopa’s and Yashoda’s Beloved Son, Krishna.  Sri Ramanuja is the father to Sampath Kumaran, caring for Him, nurturing Him, as well as instructing Him on the merciful attitude He should maintain when He is approached by all souls.

In 1098-99 Sri Ramanuja reached this town at the age of 82 and uncovered Sri Tirunarayana who was hidden/buried in the Yadavadri Hills. This auspicious day of Punarvasu (star) in the solar month of Makara (late January) is celebrated with much enthusiasm here. A temple was built and the Lord worshipped by the pAncharAtra tradition.  The Lord also showed Sri Ramanuja through a vision, the place where the holy white (tiru-maN) soil (which his devotees could use for the holy emblems on their fore heads) could be excavated.  This soil is being used by millions of devotees even today.

As Sri Ramanuja was in search for a processional deity for the temple festivities, He was instructed by the Lord to go north (Delhi) and bring Him back from the Delhi Sultan’s daughter Bibi. This marked a special occasion in his life.  Sampath Kumaran is said to have walked and jumped on his lap when he called out to Him.

The people who helped Sri Ramanuja carry Sampath Kumaran from Delhi by foot were the local tribes from the forest areas.  Sri Ramanuja gave them a special place in the temple activities, and named them Tiru-kulattars (the people who belong to the family of Goddess Sri Maha Lakshmi).  Even to this date these people have special previlages in the temple festivities.

Melukote was the temple where Sri Ramanuja began his strong administrative reform.  This included assignment of different temple duties to different people/families.  He then used this format at all other temples. All the temple festivities to this date are carried out by the local dwellers in the same manner as Sri Ramanuja established more than 900 years ago.

During his stay at Melukote Sri Ramanuja paid much attention to the social aspect of the human community.  He laid great emphasis on bringing quality and happiness to human life.  He made the temple the central focus of all activity.  He included people irrespective of caste/gender/background/economical status, etc in temple activities.  Local people were given specific tasks with income that was accountable.  He set up neighborhoods in and around the temple for all.  He also made arrangements to provide water and other resources for them.  Small-scale industries that served the local people and temples were set up to make families economically sound.  Elaborate festivals were organized and he strongly encouraged the participation of the entire community.

Many scholars and people from different faiths surrendered to Sri Ramanuja under the Hoysala reign of King Vishnuvardhana. Although their spoken language was the Sansrit-based Kannada, equal importance was given to the Dravida Vedas, the 4000 Divine outpourings of the AzhvArs, as the Sanskrit Vedas.

In accordance with the Sri Vaishnava tradition where the Acharya is given equal or more importance than the Lord, the people of this special town give extraordinary importance to Sri Ramanuja and His Darling Child.  The daily worship is done first at the shrine of Sri Ramanuja and subsequently to the main presiding deities.

Although there are no alwar poems sung in direct reference to Melkote, Sri Ramanuja dedicated the 4.1.1 verse of Sri NammazhvAr’s TiruvAImozhi to ThiruNarayana.

The two main festivals in addition to the traditional Sri Vaishnava festivals, held at this sacred place are the famous Vairamudi festival (The Festival of the Diamond Crown) and Sri Ramanuja Tirunakshatram (Sri Ramanuja’s Appearance Day) festival. The former is held in the Solar month Panguni (late March) on the star Pushyam where Sampath Kumaran majestically adorns the sparkling, resplendent diamond-studded crown.  The latter is held during the solar month of Chittirai (late April), on the star TiruvAdirai (Ardra).  Both these are 10-day-long festivals where the town sees tens of thousands of devotees to enjoy the Divine Form of the Lord Sampath Kumaran and His Father, Sri Ramanuja.

Sthlapuranam :
It is said that this sthala Emperumaan is kept in the Agraharam (Where all Vaishnavas live in a some place all together) in Vithukodu and after sometime, he is changed to this place. This sthalam also explains about the unity of Vaishnavam and Saivam.
As soon we enter this sthalam, we can see a separate sannadhi for Lord Shiva and behind this is the Sannadhi for Uyyavantha perumal.
This sthala perumal is also called with the name “Abhaya pirathan” giving his seva and protecting (Abhayam) his bhaktas. It is said that this sthala perumal is said to be same as the amsam of Lord Shivawith the name “Aabhathsagaayar”. (Abhath means danger and Sagaayar means person who helps at the time of danger).
This sthala perumal gave his prathyaksham for Ambhareeshan. Ambhareesh is the son of Nabhakanan and who is a great king. He was a great Vishnu bhakta and once he did a tapas against Vishnu and at that time, Emperumaan Sriman Narayanan came there as “Devendran Indiran”. Seeing Devendran, Ambhareeshan told that he didnt do the tapas to see Indra, he did that to get the dharshan of Sriman Narayanan. On hearing this, the Emperumaan seeing his bhakti towards him, showed his original roopan and gave him lots of Varams.Once, Ambhareeshan did fasting (Viradham) towards Emperumaan on all EkAdasi. He gave 60 cows and after Ekaadasi, he finishes the Viradham by doing Paarayanam (devoting the perumal and then eating) on Dvadasi. Same way, once he did this Viradham and was waiting for some Narayana Bhaktas, so that he may give them the food and then he can eat. At that time, he saw Duruvaasa, Duruvaasa said that he will accept the food from Ambhareeshan after bath. So, he went to Kalathi river and asked Ambhareeshan that he should finish the fasting only after he comes. Duruvaasa muni went to the river for bathing but didn’t come up till the end of Dvadasi. But, Ambhareeshan had to finish the Viradham by taking some food (or) water. At the end time of Dvadesi, Ambhareeshan could not wait for Duruvaasa Muni and took some water and finished the Viradham.
On seeing this, Duruvaasa muni got angry on him and sent an arakkan (demon) to kill. But, Ambharees with the help of Vishnu chakkaram killed the Arakkan. Duruvaasa muni felt bad for his act and blessed Ambhareesh.Ambhareesh asked this sthala perumal that he should get the dharshan of the perumal in Viyugha Avathaar (perumal should be seen in all the directions) and as requested by Ambhareesh, this sthala perumal, Uyyavantha perumal gives his seva in all the 4 directions. The perumal in the center is worshipped by Dharma, the west directional perumal is worshipped by Arjuna, the left side perumal is worshipped by Bheema and the perumal in the right side is worshipped by Nakula and Sahadeva. So, this perumal is worshipped by all the Panja Pandavas and it is one of the historical issue that is explained.
And this sthalam is said to be the Mukthisthalam of Ambhareesh.
There is some similar issues that is found to be common with this divyadesam and Thiruchitrakooda divyadesam. In both these divya desam, the perumal is found in Vyuha avatar by giving their seva in Nindra Thirukkolam in this sthalam and pallikonda thirukkolam in Thiruchitra koodam. In both of this sthalam, the perumal is said to be the amsam of Lord Shiva and Thiruchitrakoodam is said to have the relation with Ramayan and this sthalam is said to have the relation with Mahabarath.
In Thiruchitrakoodam, Thirumangai alwar does the Mangalasasanam of the perumal using Sankara barana Ragam and likewise this sthala perumal is done the Mangalasasanam by Kulasekara Alwar with the same sankara Bharana Ragam.Moolavar:
The Moolavar of this sthalam is Uyyavantha Perumal. He is in Nindra Thirukkolam facing his thirumugham along the south direction. He is also named as “Abhayapirathan”. The perumal is prathyaksham for Ambhareesh.

Azvaan’s Sri Sukthees..

January 21, 2010

Azhwan being the master of all the Vedas, 4000 Divya Prabhandham, works of other Aacharyaas, etc., created five different stavams (five different composition of slogams) named “Panjastavam”. Even though the “Vedas” happened to be the master of everything in this world, it is not easy to understand the meanings for several versus of the Vedas. That is where, Azhwan “Panjastavam” gives an insight into the various in-depth meanings from the Vedas. If we depict “Vedas” as a girl, Azhwan’s Panjastavam is the “Maangalya Soothram” for her. Even if “Veda” girl has got lot of other ornaments in various parts of her body, this Panjastavam is the most important ornament, the “Maangalya Soothram”. Those stavams include the following.

  • Sri Athimaanushastavam – It explains the glory of various incarnations of SrimanNarayana (namely RAMA and KRISHNA)
  • Sri Varadharajastavam – It explains the glory of Lord Varadharaja and it ends with an explanation on how we can reach the lotus feet of the Lord through Sri.Ramanuja.
  • Sri Stavam – It explains the glory of Sridevi Naachiyaar.
  • Sri Vaigundastavam – It explains the Vaigundanathan and the associated glory
  • Sri Sundarabahustavam – It explains the glory of ThirumaaliurmSolai Azhagar.

Sri Koorathazhwan Kaattiya Vazhi..

January 21, 2010
  1. We will adopt virtues like humane-ness, compassion, straightforwardness and the like.
  2. We will have unassailable faith that the only means by which we can live in this world is the pair of feet of Sri Ramanuja, the World Teacher.

  4. We will keep away from those contemplate to harm us. We will help them (to come out of such a frame of mind) if possible.

Thiruvaaymozi and Sama Vetham..

January 21, 2010

Saama Vedam had originally 1001 branches. We have very few left now.
NammAzhwAr’s celebrated Thiruvaimozhi is recognized as the Saama Veda
SaarArtham.Moksha PrApthi dheerga SaraNAgathy is the precious PurushArtham covered by ThiruvAimozhiTatthvam for Sri VaishNavAs is:
“asEsha chid-achith prakAram Brahma yEkamEva tatthvam”
Brahman is the one and only truth, the two others (sentients and insentients)
are His (Brahman’s) aspects.
In ThiruvAimozhi (2088), AzhwAr echoes this tatthvam: “avayavai thOrum
udal misai uyirenak-karantheng um paranthu” (He is pervasively present in all. He is indeed the sath. All are His body. He is the indwelling soul (antharyAmi Brahman).
Elsewhere in ThiruvAimozhi, AzhwAr instructs us : “uruvinan, aruvinan (2084)
AND uruvam ivvuruvuhaL (2090)“. Here, AzhwAr states that He is the soul of all sentient beings; He is also present in non-sentient beings.
Hitham for Sri VaishNavan is prapatthi (SaraNAgathy) or Bhakthi yOgam to
practise to reach Him. In ThiruvAimozhi Paasurams 2095 & 2100, AzhwAr
points this out: “iRai sErmin” (Worship the Lord with bhakthi); iRai uLLuha
(Meditate on the Lord).
The jeevan recognizes thru AchArya UpadEsam that it is the unconditional
servant (sEshan) and He is the Supreme Lord (sEshi). The jeevan transforms
from samsAri (Bhaddha Jeevan) to asamsAri (muktha Jeevan) thru the
anushtAnam of Bhakthi or Prapatthi Yogam. yOgam is difficult to practice and therefore Prapatthi yOgam is the only means left for us in Kali yugam.
PurushArTam for Sri VaishNavan is the supreme Bliss (brahmAnandham) of
nithya kaimkaryam to Sri Vaikunta NaaTan after arriving in Sri Vaikuntam via the archirAdhi maargam. After Moksham, the liberated soul never returns to samsAric world. AzhwAr describes that Supreme abode of the Lord as: “meetchiyinRi Vaikuntha Maanahar” (TVM 2523); The Lord is seated in the hall of splendid effulgence. Numerous eternally liberated Jeevans and liberated jeevans serve Him there. AzhwAr says that he joins that blessed assembly and enjoys the endless bliss that he longed for: MaamaNi MaNtapatthu anthamil pErinpatthu adiyarOdu irunthamai (TVM 3172). AzhwAr describes that bliss as
Saayujya Moksham, the best of all PurushArTams. It is the bliss, never-toend.
ThiruvAimozhi 1.2 is an outstanding summation of PurushArtham. In the very first Paasuram (Veedumin muRRavum–), Azhwaar says: “Renounce all things except the Lord. Enough! Then surrender your soul to the Lord, who is its actual Master and owner. He resides in your soul; indeed, He resides in the
souls of all in the world. All souls are body to Him. He is the Lord of the upper
world, Paramapadha. Relinquishing all (desires) and surrendering the soul to
Him, you have secured Parama Padham also in an assured manner“.
In the third paasuram, AzhwAr says: “Banish from your heart the feeling of
independence from God. The soul and body are subservient to Him. Once you
have acquired this spirit of complete surrender, it is a matchless and
unexceeded state of attainment“.
In the sixth paasuram (TVM 1.2.6), Azhwar talks about the infinite Dayaa of
the Lord: “His Love for the surrendered soul is His most eloquent attribute —
may be, more than His Lordly supremacy“.
In the 8th paasuram (TVM 1.2.8), AzhwAr talks about the true sense of
subservience to be practised by the individual soul: “We have three faculties:
Thinking with the heart (uLLam), speaking with the tongue (urai) and acting
with the body (seyal) — use these three to serve Him; cut off all other
attachments –Let all the three faculties converge on Him. Think of Him and of His activities; talk of Him, recite His names, sing His praise; perform praNAms and PradakshiNams and other services. These are concrete manifestations of the concept of subservience (sEshathva) that is being cherished in the heart“.

SWAMY NAMMAZHWAR & TAMIZH MARAI

In every one of the prabhandham of Swamy NammAzhwAr, one could find the distilled essence of the Four Vedams, Upanishads and Brahma Soothrams. As one belonging to the fourth varNam by birth, He could not study Vedams. As a strict observer of VarNAsrama Dharmams and with the special anugraham of SrI VishvaksEnar, third in line in our AchArya Paramparai, VedArthams were revealed to Him without going thru the standard route of Adhyayanam. Even Lord Raamachandran and Lord KrishNa had to go thru adhyayanam route via their AchAryans for Vedic training. That is why; Swamy NammAzhwAr could intuitively grasp the meanings of VedAs and acquired the title of “VEDAM TAMIZH SEYTHA MAARAN”.Let us select at Random some of the Paasuram passages from ThiruvAimozhi and map them to the Vedic sources. One can devote huge chunks of time in this correlation but we will focus on a few passages for illustrative purposes:
The First Patthu of ThiruvAimozhi has three main messages consistent with
the Vedic utterances:
(1) Sriman Narayanan is the best UpAyam for our salvation.
(2) He is easy of access and can be readily worshipped.
(3) He is the One, who grants the bliss of Moksham; He is the Moksha
DhAyaka Mukundan.
The VyAkhyAnams of Swamy Desikan’s DhramidOpanishad Taathparya
RathnAvaLi, DhramidOpanishad Saaram, SrI BhAshya-Dhravida-Aagama
Aadhya dasakadwandhva Eika-kaNDyam of Kaanchi Azhagiya MaNavALa
PerumAL Jeyar establish clearly that the FIRST 22 PAASURAMS OF
THIRUVAIMOZHI CONTAIN THE SAARARTAMS OF THE FOUR CHAPTERS
OF SRI BHASHYAM, a commentary on Brahma Soothrams by AchArya
RaamAnuja.
The First chapter of Brahma Soothram is known as SamanvayAdhyAyam.
Topics here are: The Jagath KaaraNathvam of Brahman (Sriman NarAyaNan),
Creation of the world by Brahman,
The differences of Brahman from ChEtanams and achEtanams
The Lord with auspicious attributes (SavisEsha Brahman) is Iswaran.
The First 6 Paasurams of the First Thirumozhi (Pathikam) of ThiruvaImozhi
maps one on one to SamanvayAdhyAyam.
The second chapter of Sri BhAshyam is avirodhAdhyAyam.
It deals with aBhAdhyathavam. It identifies Brahman as KaaraNam and the
universe et al as Kaaryam. They will never become one. The relationship

between Brahman and the ChEtanAchEtanams are established here. The
Paasurams 6-11 of the first Thirumozhi (Pathikam) map on to the concepts
covered by the second chapter of Brahma Soothrams.
The third chapter of Brahma Soothram is SaadhanAdhyAyam. It covers the
UpAsanaa margam for one who desires Moksham and that Bhakthi is the
UpAsanai (Saadhanai). The prerequisites for that UpAsanai are discussed
here. The KurL like Paasurams (1-9 Paasurams of the second Pathikam) map
straight on to SaadhanAdhyAyam. The fourth adhyAyam of Brahma Soothram is known as Phala adhyAyam. Here the fruits of the UpAsanai (Saadhanai) of the Mumukshu are shown to be theascent to Sri Vaikuntam and eternal stay there enjoying BrahmAnandham through the performance of blemishless Kaimkaryam to the dhivya dampathis there.
The 10th and the 11th Paasurams of the second pathikam of ThiruvAimozhi and the First 5 Paasurams of the third pathikam cover the essence of
PhalAdhyAyam.
THUS THE ESSENCE OF UPANISHADS (VEDA SIRAS) ARE THOROUGHLY
MAPPED IN THE FIRST 22 OR 27 PAASURAMS OF THIRUVAIMOZHI BY
VEDAM TAMIZH SEYTHA MAARAN, SWAMY SATHAKOPAR.
The vishayams of the other Patthus:
Second Patthu: Lord is anubhava BhOgyan (the most delightful to enjoy; He is
the UpEyan (Goal). He is our Parama PurushArTam.
Third Patthu: The Lord who is the means and the goal has SubhAsraya
ThirumEni and is present in Archaa roopams for our worship. He has a dhivya MangaLa vigraham.
Fourth Patthu: Our Lord as an UpEyam (Goal) is far superior to Iswaryam and
KaivalyamFifth Patthu: The only recourse for us are the sacred feet of the Lord forMoksham. We have to seek them as our refuge and protection.
Sixth Patthu: Azhwar performs SaraNAgathy to the Lord. SaraNAgathy has
roots in the VedAs & Upanishads. Azhwar performs SaraNAgathy to the Lord
after performing PurushakAra prapatthi to Mahaa Lakshmi as one without any recourse (ananya gathi and Aakinchanyan).
Seventh Patthu: Azhwar salutes the Lord as One who chases away the
anishtams (SamsAric pains) of those who seek His protection.
Eighth Patthu: The celebration here is about the Lord being under the total
control of those who sought Him as refuge. He enjoys residence in the heart
lotus of the Aasrithars. He relishes the DhAsya nishtai of Jeevans.
Ninth Patthu: AzhwAr’s Vyasanam (Sorrow) from ViSlEsham (separation from the Lord) is movingly covered along with Bhagavath GuNAnubhavam.
Tenth Patthu: Here, Sriman NaarAyaNan’s role as Moksha Maarga sahAyan.
He takes us by archirAdhi mArgam to His Supreme abode.
There have been scholarly vyAkhyAanams to map the ten patthus of
ThiruvAimozhi to AshtAksharam as well as Dhvayam. ThiruvAimozhi is
celebrated as Dheerga SaraNAgathy. All of these analyses have Vedic roots.
The Veda Saamyam of ThiruvAimozhi and other Prabhandhams of Swamy
NammAzhwAr is a vast subject to explore and enjoy.
