According to the latest report from the Archaeological Department of Srilanka (http://www.lankalibrary.com/geo/dera2.html), the land bridge named as Adam’s Bridge is a narrow ridge of sand and rocks, mostly dry, which connects Mannar Island (Sri Lanka) with Pamban Island (India) about 18 ½ miles West-North-Westward. At high tide it is covered by c.4 ft (1.2 m) of water. (http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-AdamsBri.html) The status of the bridge is still a mystery as the legends trace the bridge to have more than a million years of existence and related to the epic Ramayana. The Srilankan Archeology Department also confirms the possible duration of the bridge’s existence to be around one to two million years. However the natural or man-made status of the bridge is unknown. According to the Srilankan Library archives at http://www.lankalibrary.com/geo/ancient/nasa.htm, this bridge has been in existence for 1,750,000 years. This would mean it had been there for – the last 1/16th period of the Treta Yuga (1,296,000 years/16 = 80,500) -81,000 years (1,750,000 – (864,000+5,000) = 81,000 years) in the Tretha Yuga, survived for 864,000 years of the Dwapara Yuga, and has survived for the past 5,000 years in the Kali Yuga.
NASA (http://www.nasa.gov) in its Astronaut Photo of Earth Display Records hosts a wide array of photos of Rama’s Bridge made of a chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long interconnecting India with Sri Lanka.

In the summary of Charama Shadka, Swami Alavandar says that the Lord had told whatever was to be told to Arjuna, in the preceding 12 Chapters.
pradh¯ana purus.avyakta sarve´svara vivecanam |
karmadh¯ırbhaktirity¯adih.p¯urva´ses.o 0ntimoditah.||Pradhana means all associated with body or prakruti. That is, it includes ahankaram, mahan, Five Bhoota, Five Karmendriya, Five Gyanendriya, Five Tanmatras and mind [24 in total]. These are inert matters. Purusha means Jeevatman. Then Sarvesvara, the Lord, Who controls Pradhana and Purusha. Vivecanam means viveka gyana or analytical knowledge. That is understanding that body and soul are different in all respects. Also, understanding the Lord as the Owner and Commander of body and soul. All these were told in previous Chapters. Now, we will see summary of Chapter 13:

dehasvar¯upam.¯atm¯aptihetuh.¯atmavi´sodhanam |
bandhaheturviveka´sca trayoda´sa ud¯ıryate ||

Body is temporary, got out of past karma. Soul is not natural associate of any body [13.2].Twenty such qualities are listed from 13.8. Amanitvam – without attachment, adambitvam – without publicity..Bhakti can fetch material benefits; but if we pray for material benefits, Bhakti would not grow. All such noble qualities should be acquired. In 13.20, the Lord told that because of association with the Three qualities[sattvam, rajas and tamas], atman suffers rebirths. To get released we should realize the difference between atman and body [13.24]…

Rajo quality binds us in desires arising out of action, tamo quality puts us in delusion. Sattva quality keeps one in happiness, good health and with knowledge [ 14.6]. Rajo qualitywill keep our desires enhanced [14.7]. Tamo quality will keep us in carelessness, laziness and sleep [14.8].In 14.23, the Lord says that qualities would be doing their nature, and why atman should get worried about that. We should be indifferent to them. In 14.25, it is said that if we keep ourselves away from worldly activities, with this knowledge, and be indifferent to praises and abuses, then we are considered to have crossed those qualities.

In 15.1, the Lord says that samsaram is like an inverted banyan [aswatta] tree, with roots up in Satya lok [symbolises Brahma creating from above], branches down below. This tree can be cut off only by an axe of vairagya or detachment [15.3]. In 15.15, the Lord says that He resided in everyone’s heart; under His control, one understood, remembered or forgot anything. He is the One, understood from all Vedas and Vedantas. Result of Vedas are also granted only by Him. He further says that He is different from baddha and mukta atman [15.16]. He is praised as Purushottama in Vedas and in this World [15.18]. He si pervading in all, supporting all and commanding all, and so, He is different from and superior to all [15.17]. Person, recognizing Him as Prushottama, [Who has descended for our benefit as Sri Srinathji], attains Him [15.19]

He mentions the means of Devas and Asuras. [16.1]. Gyanam, Yagna, Tapas, Swadhyaya, etc,. are identifications of Devas. Abhayam- person called Deva is not afraid of anyone; because he is straight forward and follows Shastras. His mind should be clear. That is , he is always thinking of atman. He should be always in Gyana Yoga. Dhanam – he should donate in accordance with Shastras. We should control our sense organs. We should perform the daily Pancha Maha Yagnas. Swadhyayam – chanting Vedas regularly. Arjavam – living honestly..

..Lord Brahma wanted to conduct one yagna. But, since Saraswati Devi was not with him, he married Gayatri Devi and conducted the yagna. After it was started, Saraswati Devi came, and found Gayatri by the side of her husband. She got angry, and cursed Brahma that he would not have any temple anywhere..brahma kovil/pushkara theertham/gayathri/ saavithri devi/then desa sirpa kalai..puraana mandir venu gobala swami.In Purana Mandir, Sri Venugopala, as a very large idol, is gracing, along with Consorts. On one side Sri Ranganatha, reclining, is gracing..ramanujar periya thirumeni/ maa muniyaiyum sevikalaam..paza kaala kovil naya mandir vaikunda naathan..vedanda desihan sannithi..gayatri savithri brahmavaal vaibavam periya neer padaithu anghu vurainthu athu kadaithu adaithu-sethu pandanam thiru thinaay yengal sittril vanthu sithaiyeyl..paapangal tholaiyum..theertha vadivil sevai..

The Lord who had appeared on Garudan and chased Maali asuran
and others(of LankA before rAvaNan’s time) and removed the
sufferings of the world. Thereby the Lord became the sweetest
nectar for those whose eyes were welled with tears of joy that time.
Such Greatest Lord- I saw Him at ThirukkOviloor, where the
bees hum in the most fragrant flower gardens.

anbukoorum adiyavar- to PeyAzhwAr.

Here Kaliyan refers to kuzhaavarivaNdisai paadum paadal kEttu theenkarumbu kaNN
vaLarum. “.. means: the sugarcane plants grow quicker and taller listening to
the humming and singing bees in fertile Thirukkoilur.

AzhwAr refers (inner meaning) sugarcane to the Lord of Thirukkoilur- Ayan.
Poikai, Bhoo, PeyazhwArs are the bees who sang (in chaste tamil verses).
Listening to that- grew Trivikraman in glorious form. This is the swApadEsam.
Aazvaar, Emberumaanaar, Jeeyar Thiru Adikalley Sarannam.

Manavala Mamunigal is considered the avatara of Swami Ramanuja. There are many ways to demonstrate this. Some are shown below.

1. Both Emberumanar and Mamunigal have affinity to writing vyakhyanams more than anything else. Ramanuja has graced us with vyakhyanams such as Sri Bhashyam, Vedanta Deepasaram and Gita Bhashyam. Mamunigal’s vyakhyanams for rahasya granthas are well known. Just as Ramanuja wrote a few original works such as Vedartha Sangraham and Gadya Trayam, Mamunigal too has written some such as Yatiraja Vimshati and Upadesa Ratthinamalai.

2. There are many who fill their works with reproach and mockery of others and their works. Neither Ramanuja nor Mamunigal allow even an iota of that to enter their works, leaving them as the most pure Srisooktis.

3. Both Ramanuja and Mamunigal fill their works all over with the innermost meanings of Sastras, thereby pleasing the hearts of scholars.

4. At the beginning of Sri Bhashyam, Ramanuja clearly shows his devotion to the pUrvAcharyas works (“bhagavad bhOdAyana krutAm …”). Mamunigal also shows the same in Upadesa Ratthinamalai (“munnOr mozhintha muRai thappAmal …”) and else where (“munnavarAm nam kuravar mozhigaL uLLap peRROm”). In addition, he has filled his vyakhyana granthas with the words of pUrvAcharyas.

5. Both Ramanuja and Mamunigal are celebrated for growing and spreading the words of Nammazhvar. Ramanuja’s vAzhi thirunAmam says “mARanurai seydha thamizh maRai vaLarththOn vAzhiyE”. One of the Thiruvaymozhi thaniyan goes
“Ayndha perum
sIrAr sadagOpan senthamizh vEdham tharikkum
pErAdha uLLam peRa
Eyndha perum kIrththi irAmAnusa muni than
vAyndha malarppAdham vaNangukinREn”.

In this matter, is it necessary to even explain Mamunigal’s involvement? It is sufficient to quote one pasuram
“sERRuk kamala vayal sUzharangar tham sIr thazhaippap
pORRiththozhu nalla andhaNar vAzha ipbUthalaththE
mARRaRRa sempon maNavALa mAmuni vandhilanEl
ARRil karaiththa puLiyallavO thamizhAraNamE”

6. Ramanuja established 74 simhAsanAdipatis and through them conducted the darshana nirvAham. Mamunigal too established the ashta dikgajAchAryas (“thiramAga thikgajangaLittaruLum perumAL”) and through them conducted the darshana nirvAham.

7. Ramanuja had great affinity for all divyadesams (“manniya thennarangApuri mAmalai maRRum uvanthidu nAL”, “srirangam karaishailam anjanagirim …”). Mamunigal too demonstrated his great affinity for divyadesams by doing many yatras to them (“adaivudanE thiruppathigaL nadantha vErvai ARavO”).

Ramanuja showed affinity to Thirunarayanapuram that is not part of the 108 divyadesams and submitted the “oru nAyagamAy” Thiruvaymozhi pasuram to that kshetram and treated it like a divyadesam. Mamunigal too submitted the Thiruvaymozhi pasuram “thIrppArai yAmini” to Raja Mannar Kovil and treated it like a divyadesam.

8. That Ramanuja is the avatara of Adisesha is well known. This is explained in Garuda Vahana Pandita’s Divyasuri Saritam and in Vaduga Nambi’s Yatiraja Vaibhavam. That Mamunigal is also Adisesha’s avatara is shown in his life history and also in works such as Varavaramuni Shatakam.

9. Ramanuja greatly grew the wealth that is Srirangam. This is well established in Kozhil Ozhigu and in his vAzhi thirunAmam (“thennarangar selvam muRRUm thiruththi vaiththAn vAzhiyE”). This is the case for Mamunigal also. Does not this world say each day “aranga nagar vAzha innumoru nURRANdirum”.

Aazhvar Emberumaanaar Jeeyar Thiruvadikalle Saranam
