..4-7.Ramanujar’s  commentary..

.No fixed time schedule has been mandated for Lord Krishna to manifest Himself in His avatar forms or authorised incarnations but he declares beginning with yada yada which means that: whenever or wherever dharma or righteousness as ordained by the Vedic scriptures under varnasrama or the four stages and position in Vedic culture become degraded and unrighteousness increases and becomes dominant at that time Lord Krishna or any of His authorised incarnations descends and becomes manifest. It should be noted that all the names of His avatars or incarnations are recorded in the Bhagavat Purana and othe Vedic scriptures with additional details so that it can be proven when His divine incarnation has manifested.

4-8..Ramanuja’s Commentary

The word” sadhunam” meaning virtuous refers to the sadhus or the saintly devotees, the eminent Vaisnavas who diligently seek refuge in Lord Krishna in every thing they think and do. These persons feel that without seeing and perceiving the Supreme Lord, without chanting His names, without continuously reminiscing over His phenomenal pastimes and without meditating on Him that there lives are devoid and empty and they find it difficult to even carry on their existence. There are even those with whom a single moment of absence from the Lord is like a lifetime. For the protection of these virtuous and holy beings, lest they in their agony of separation from me expire from this world, Lord Krishna bequeaths upon them the privilege of being able to perceive His confidential appearances and pastimes and partake in communion with Him. So in summary the following reasons of Lord Krishnas avatars or incarnations is: 1) for protecting the virtuous 2) for destroying the wicked 3) for re-establishing dharma or eternal righteousness which had become obscured. As dharma to all beings is factually the primary mode of worship for the Supreme Lord Krishna and His authorised avatars in order to attain moksa or salvation from the cycle of birth and death in the material existence; it should be known as the highest good for all beings. The words yuge yuge meaning from millennium to millennium is to indicate that the Supreme Lords incarnations may appear at anytime not being limited to a particular yuga.

4-9..Ramanuja’s Commentary

..Whosoever is able to verily realise the divine, spiritual and uniquely phenomenal nature of the Supreme Lord Krishnas incarnations and transcendental pastimes which are exclusively manifested for the benefit of all those who take refuge in Him solely and which are intended for the protection of the righteous who understand the real tattva or truth concerning His appearances. The word divyam in this verse meaning divine confirms that Lord Krishna appearance is not the same as the compulsory births of the conditioned embodied entities as a consequent reaction to their past life activities arising from their timeless interaction with prakriti or material nature. So in conclusion whoever understands that all avatars or incarnations emanate from Lord Krishna who is eternally possessed with all glorious qualities and wonderful attributes, such a person is not subject to rebirth once they leave their present body, but attains the eternal spiritual abode with the Supreme Lord. Put more succinctly such a person possessing accurate discriminative knowledge from disciplic succession regarding Lord Krishnas incarnations and divine pastimes becomes free from all sins which stand in the way of coming to Him. Such a person in there present birth will attain Him by placing implicit reliance and full faith in Him in the manner described in previous verses and by making Him the be all and end all of their lives makes themselves extremely dear to the Lord which qualifies their existence for attaining Him. Next will be described the superb godly qualities of the these saintly persons.

4-10..Ramanuja’s Commentary.

..What Lord Krishna is confirming is that legions of human beings over the ages have attained true realisation of His avatar forms or incarnations and His lilas or divine pastimes through jnana yoga or the cultivation of Vedic knowledge and purifying themselves attained moksa or liberation and entered the abode of the Supreme Lord. The spiritually advanced in Vedic wisdom know something of the truth about the Supreme Lord appearances and pastimes. But it is only the Vaisnava devotees of the Supreme Lord, who desire Him alone and who serve Him with love and devotion, only they can truly comprehend the sublime transcendental mystery of His divine appearances, pastimes, forms, abode and nature.

The rough translation runs thus : Let all the people be happy.  Let the entire world be happy. Let every Dharma grow and glow. Let there be every good thing happen to all.  Let peace peace prevail everywhere. These are the key words of the Veda. In short, let all the people, irrespective of caste, creed, Religion & faith in harmony and happily.

….Recall Aandal’s “vaiathu vaallveerkaal..”paasuram..a small girl from Sri villiputtur is calling all persons from this universe to join her in this nonbu..

..According to Ayurveda, (a science dedicated to herbals & naturals) Haldi the Turmeric plays vital role in day to day life. It is the only ingredient used for all type of cooking agent . It is a natural skin conditioner, heals cuts, burns and wounds etc. Turmeric is used as a main and basic formula for all health & Skin care products .It is also used as main and basic substance for skins Ointments.

…..Each and every one of us emit brain wave and The wavelength differs from person to person. And to regularize the wave length Hindu women used to apply kungumam ( kum kum) made out of pure turmeric. Also It is very difficult to hypnotize or mesmerize a person who applies Turmeric spot regularly in one’s fore head. In addition to this, the benefit of regularizing ones ,own brain wave length is activated for those apply it regularly.

..There are eight SwayamVyaktha (self revealing) kshetrams in India. It virtually means, that no man created or sculptured those Statues of the Lord in these places, but all of His own appearance and creation. These are holy places where the Lord revealed himself to give darshan (Audience) to the People. These are:

Badrikashramam, Salagramam, Naimisaranyam, Pushkaram, Thirumalai (Tirupathi), Srirangam, Srimushnam & Thothadri (Vanamamalai)

Emperumaan, Lord Sriman Narayanan is found in various Thirukkolam. The Thirukkolam (Appearance of His revered Idols) in 108 Divyakshetrams are listed  below:

Kidantha Thirukkolam (Sleeping Posture) – 27 Divyadesams

Veetrirundha Thirukkolam (Sitting Position) – 21 Divyadesams

Nindra Thirukkolam (Standing Position) – 60 Divyadesams

… The Lord appears facing Towards East direction at 79 temples, facing towards West direction – 19, facing towards North direction – 3  and facing towards south direction in 7 temples.

..temples are located in places where the earth’s magnetic wave paths densely paases thro..like hill tops etc..a copper plate with vedic manthras written on it is placed under the moorthy in garga graha..this absorbs the magnetic waves and radiates to the surroundings..so if one visits temples and does pradakshinams he gets refreshed..also  the theertham with cardoman, saffron, clove and thulasi leaves and pachai karpooram increases the medicinal value of the water..

..Also piercing their ear and wearing some ornamental ear stead found another mode of controlling the kidney bladder.  This was combined with religion and health and to beautify the appearance too!  In the earlier days, erring students were never beaten or slapped, but teachers used to pull the ears of the boys. It is said pulling ones ear frequently increases the memory power and also controls the renal functions..

…by covering  the hand with the Dharbham.(holy grass)   it was found that the grass absorbed about 60% of the(x-ray) radiation! When the so powerful X-ray radiation can be absorbed by the Holy Grass, why can it not absorb the ill-radiations spread over the atmosphere..that is the reason  we use darbham for grahanam days also to protect our food and also pregnant ladies..

..At least 20 learned Vedic scholars would stand near the “kumba jalam” ( holy water kept in thecopper or brass vessel) and holding a “Dharbam”,one end in their hand and other end in the water, would recite all the slokas  and do the “Japam”  – I think this is because “Dharbam” is a very good conductor of acoustic vibrations – When this happens you can surely find the difference in the water’s state before and after such a japam

..The beginning of the kali yuga, according to the astronomical information from Mahabharata and other Vedic scriptures, started at 2:27a.m. on February 18th in the year 3102 B.C. exactly when Lord Krishna had left this planet after 125 years and 4 months of His earthly pastimes. It is also described that the arrival of Kali yuga was witnessed by the great heroes of Mahabharat like Yudhistira.

…The meaning of “Ithi- ha- asam” is “It happened thus”.

..reincarnation or re births..

“As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change”.“As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones”. (Bhagavad-Gita 2.13, 22

…..Now, what is the cause of getting new body in the next life? The main cause for this is one’s activities that can be either pious or impious. Every action, either physical, emotional or mental, every movement occurring either on the plane of gross matter -sthulam- or on the astral planes -sukshma- produces a seed of karma.

v ..Being a seed, karma fructifies or does not fructify immediately after it is sown. The innumerable seeds we produce by our actions -desire, aversion, lust, greed, hatred, good or bad words, etc. will undoubtedly produce, sooner or later, a positive or negative result according to the nature of the seed, if not in this life, then in some future one. As a man sows, so shall he reap.

…Vishnu sahasranama stotrams and  birth-natchatrams ….Sri Sri Sri Tridandi Srimannarayana Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji during His discourse on the eve of Sri Bhishma Ekaadasi Viratpaarayanam in Hyderabad where lakhs of people gathered on 13th February 2003, had  declared that the 108 slokhas (sloka) of Sri Vishnusahasranaama Stothram removes all the ills associated with any grahadoshams to any chanter of any Nakshatram(Stars viz.constellations) and provides supreme solace and supreme bliss. There are 27 Nakshatram starting from Aswini and ending with Revati. Each Nakshatram has four Paadam. Thus 108 slokhas correspond to 27 X 4 nakshatra padams. Thus a person born in Aswini 1st Paadam can chant first slokha, Bharani 1st padams can chant 5th slokha and so on for respective Nakshatra Saanthi. A person not sure of one’s Nakshatra can chant all the 108 slokhas and get rid of all ills associated with one’s Nakshatram and attain sampoorna saanthi.

..Gaayatri Mantra..
Gayatri mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance in Vedic dharma. This mantra has also been termed as Savitri and Veda-Mata, the mother of the Vedas. The literal meaning of the mantra is:God! You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Almighty.

You are all Light. You are all Knowledge and Bliss. You are Destroyer of fear; You are Creator of this Universe,You are the Greatest of all. We bow and meditate upon your light.
You guide our intellect in the right direction.
The mantra, however, has a great scientific import too, which somehow got lost in the literary tradition.
The modern astrophysics and astronomy tell us that our Galaxy called Milky Way or Akash-Ganga contains approximately 100,000 million of stars. Each star is like our sun having its own planet system. We know  that the moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon. Allplanets round the sun. Each of the above bodies revolves round at its own axis as well. Our sun along with its family takes one round of the galactic center in 22.5 crore years. All galaxies including ours are moving away at a terrific velocity of 20,000 miles per second. And now the alternative scientific meaning of the mantra step-by-step:(A) Om bhur bhuvah swah:Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second.
This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om. The sound was heard during meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it too their colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound Om the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is set (permanent). Therefore, it was the first ever-revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, “Omiti ekaksharam Brahma”, meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om, which contains only one syllable (8/12). This sound Om heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-Brahma a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy= 1/2MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or storehouse of energy (prana).
(B) Tat savitur varenyam:Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect. Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person. Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars).
A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the riverbank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under: –
(C) Bhargo devasya dheemahi:Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The Rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do Japam of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra). This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realize it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under:
(D) Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat:
Dhiyo (intellect), yo (who), nah (we all), prachodayat (guide to right Direction). O God!  Deploy our intellect on the right path.Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra:The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing / respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our (nah) intellect dhiyoSo we notice that the important points hinted in the mantra are:-1) The total kinetic energy generated by the movement galaxies acts as an umbrella and balances the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence it was named as the Pranavah (body of energy). This is equal to 1/2 mv2 (Mass of galaxies x velocity)2) Realizing the great importance of the syllable OM, the other later date religions adopted this word with a slight change in accent, viz., amen and Ameen.3) The God could be realized through the saguna (gross),upasana (method), i.e., (a) by chanting the name of the supreme as OMand(b) by meditating upon the light emitted by stars(sun).

Tatvams villakkam-Shri.U.V.Thirupullaani Sundarajan Swami’s summary..

September 27, 2007

Shri.U.V.Thirupullaani Sundarajan Swami’s summary..

Every jIvAtmA needs to acquire knowledge about tatvatrayam – cit, acit and Isvaran.

  • cit – sentient, one which has knowledge and is made of knowledge also.
  • acit – non-sentient, one which does not have any knowledge
  • Isvaran – superme lord, one who owns both cit and acit and has both as his body

Let us first see the differences between cit and acit. This in relation to our own self is understanding the difference between AtMA and dEham. Even Krsna in bhagavad gItA starts with removing the misconception of arjunA about his own self. As ThirupullAni swAmy explained, to understand this, we do not need anything but pratyaksha pramAnam (what could be understood by our senses – eyes, ears, nose, skin, etc). This is so simple that we do not even need sAstrAs to explain this.

No. AtmA (Cit) dEham (Acit)
1 nAn – What is indicated by the “I” word Idhu – what is indicated by the “this/it” words
2 udayavan – the one who owns udaimai porul – the one which is owned
3 aribavan – the one who knows ariyappadum porul – the one which is known
4 Ekam – This (“I”) is singular anEkam – This (“this/it”) is plural, since “I” knows many things
5 avaiyava Rahitham – cannot be split in to parts avaiyava Sahitham – can be split in to parts, example, hand is made of skin, flesh, etc
6 svayam prahasam – the one which shows itself and others jadam (Gyanathuku vishayam) – which is shown by others
7 prathyak (Thanakku thotrumavan) – the one which knows itself, I know that I exist paraakh (Pirarkku thondruvadhu) – the one which is known by others only
8 eppOdhum anukUlan – always favourable moopu, NOi mudhaliyavai illaadha podhu anukUlan. Irrukkum pOdhu prathikUlan. – favourable when not affected by old age, disease, etc
9 bOktha – enjoyer bOkyam – enjoyed
10 swa tantran – independent para tantran – dependent
11 sEshi – Master sEsham – servant
12 karthaA – One who does karanam – One which is used in doing an activity
13 anutva parimAnam – state of being not splittable and not combinable madhyama parimAnam – state of being splittable and combinable

Once we understand the difference between AtmA and dEham, we can proceed to look at cit and Iswaran. To understand Iswaran we need the help of sAstrAs. All of the points below are discussed in various literature quite elaborately.

No. Iswaran (paramAtmA) AtmA (cit)
1 pitA (cause – kAranam) putran (effect – kAryam)
2 rakshakan – protector rakshyan – protected
3 seshi – Master seshan – Servant
4 bharthA – husband bhAryai – wife
5 jyEyan – object of knowledge jyAthA – one who knows
6 swAmi – owner swam – owned
7 AdhAran – sustainer AdhEyan – sustained
8 AtmA (vyAbhi) – one who is antaryAmi sarIram (vyApyan) – one who has the antaryAmi
9 bOktA – enjoyer bOkyam – enjoyed
10 swa tantran – independent paratantran – dependent
11 swAbhAvika ApahadhapApmA – naturally free from sins AnApahadhapApmA – naturally not free from sins
12 swAbhAvika vijaran – naturally free from aging sajaran – naturally not free from aging

18 swAbhAvika satya sankalpan – naturally able to generate things as he desires asatya sankalpan – naturally not able to generate things as he desires
19 anantan – limitless sAnthan – limited
20 jagat KAranan – cause for the whole creation kAryam – effect

Notes:

  • jIvAtmA when attaining liberation, acquires 8 qualities (apahadapApmA, vijara:, vimruthuyu:, visoka:, vijighatsa:, abhipAsa:, satya kama:, satya sankalpa:) by the grace of the emberumAn sriman nArayana.

4-5..Ramanuja’s Commentary..

..Lord Krishna declaration of: many births have past for you and for Me is a definite affirmation of the reality of reincarnation for Arjuna and confirmation of the avatars or incarnations of the Supreme Lord Krishna. What He is confirming is that His present incarnation is as real as Arjunas present life reincarnation and that the ones from the past are real as well, subtly implying that there is a fundamental difference between them. The nature of the avatars, how they manifest and their purpose for incarnating is given next.

4-6..Ramanuja’s Commentary..

..Lord Krishna affirms that although He enters prakriti or material nature which is under His complete control, by His own sweet will through His internal potency known as yogamaya. He is never divested of His supreme transcendental attributes and imperishable potencies as Sovereign Lord of all creation even though His external from appears human. The forms and places where the Supreme Lord resides as described in the Vedic scriptures. He the spirit who luminously resides in the interior of the sun He the spirit who luminously resides in the etheric region of the heart He who is immortal and eternal He who manifested all the demigods and humans He who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent He who is resplendent and all pervasive He who is transcendental to prakriti or material nature. He who by His omniscience knows the actions and qualities of all beings The Supreme Lord Krishna assumes forms suitable to time, place and circumstances in regards to celestial being the demigods and terrestrial being humans. He manifests himself as if He were of their nature according to His desire. Being unborn He yet incarnates in many forms whenever and wherever He chooses whereas for material beings they are forcefully born impelled by their karma or the bondage caused from reactions to past actions. Next the time of manifestation for the avatars or incarnations will be indicated.

3-42…Ramanujar’s commentary..

..the senses are primarily occupied in the pursuit of pleasure and delight in sense objects the realisation of the atma or soul will never manifest. Yet the mind although fickle is capable of controlling the senses but if the mind is also inclined to enjoy the senses and is filled with thoughts of the same then realisation of the atma will also never manifest. But the intellect is superior even to the mind as it possesses the discriminative faculty. This means that the mind may be tranquil but if the intellect is inclined towards the channels of sense activities then there will be a perversion in ones intelligence and no possibility again for realisation of the atma. To show the order of gradation is Lord Krishnas intention. A question may be posed what if all three being the senses, the mind and the intellect were tranquil and passive? The unvarying answer is that kama or lust which arises from desires, covertly resides deep within the heart and is always craving for sense gratification. This kama is so powerful that it will assert its mastery over them all and domineering them will have them fully pursuing the objects of the senses for sense gratification in the phenomenal world obscuring the light of knowledge and the realisation of the atma. That which is the most powerful with its domain in the spiritual phenomena is the atma and is designated by the pronoun sah.

3-43..Ramanujar’s commentary..

..So it should understood that kama or lust is able to dominate even the intellect and thus is antagonistic to jnana yoga or the cultivation of Vedic spiritual knowledge. So one must with firm resolve restrain the senses right from the very beginning and keeping the mind resolutely established in the atma or soul, destroy this powerful enemy known as kama eradicating it at the very root.

In chapter four Lord Krishna reveals how spiritual knowledge is received by disciplic succession and the reason and nature of His descent into the material worlds. Here He also explains the paths of action and knowledge as well as the wisdom regarding the supreme knowledge which results at the culmination of the two paths. Thus this chapter is entitled: Approaching the Ultimate Truth.

4-1.. Ramanuja’s Commentary//

..In the third chapter Lord Krishna explained that only karma yoga or the performance of prescribed Vedic activities was suitable for the materialistic person aspiring for moksa or liberation from the cycle of birth and death and that such an aspirant was not competent to follow the path of jnana yoga or the cultivation of Vedic knowledge. It was also shown that even for jnana yoga practitioners that karma yoga when performed as a matter of duty without attachment was preferable. It was further illustrated that for leaders of prominence in society it is an important necessity to perform karma yoga in order that the public is guided and inspired in a righteous manner. The objective of this fourth chapter is to further emphasise the worthiness of karma yoga by giving evidence that it was taught to great personalities at the beginning of this Manavatar or cyclic appearance of one type of divine incarnations as verified in Vedic scriptures over a period of time comprising approximately every 350 million years. Also it will be shown in this chapter how karma yoga partakes of the nature of jnana yoga by reason of spiritual intentions underlying all prescribed Vedic activities. Chapter four finishes up by explaining the nature and varieties of karma yoga and the importance of spiritual awareness connected to performing every action.

4-2..There is no commentary for this verse.

4.3..Ramanuja’s Commentary..

..Lord Krishna is suggesting that it should not be presumed that the yoga or knowledge of the individual consciousness in communion with the Ultimate Consciousness being given by him is just a persuasive speech intended to prompt one to do their duty; for He now reveals that He also instructed it to Visvavan the demi-god controlling the sun, as a way of attaining moksa or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. A method intended for the salvation of all the universes and a measure designed to benefit all of creation, truly being the sublime goal of humans. Visvavan taught it to Manu who instructed it to Ikshavaku and so on successively until it was transmitted to the saintly kings from the mouths of their spiritual masters. But due to the passage of time and dull understanding of humanity this knowledge was lost and forgotten. But the very same yoga, pure and pristine is being revealed in all its entirety and details by Lord Krishna because Arjuna has taken full shelter in Him in loving devotion as the only refuge. No one other then the Supreme Lord Krishna is able to originally explain the Bhagavad-Gita as it is the essence of the sublime wisdom of all the Vedas and encapsulates the mysteries of Vedanta.

4-4..Ramanuja’s Commentary..

..The sun-god Visvavan had duly received the Bhagavad-Gita from Lord Krishna 120 million years previously; yet he was Arjunas contemporary; so an explanation of this anomalous anachronism is being requested. One may question what is the purpose to ask this from one who is aware of Lord Krishnas supreme position for it is known that even saintly and noble souls remember events from previous incarnations. Also before when the Pandava king Yudhisthira performed the Rajasuya ceremony the grandsire Bhishma was heard to say that Lord Krishna alone is the origin of all created beings and the beginning and the ending of all movable and immovable beings. So the reason Arjuna asked such a question was to get clarification presented in an exposition on the meaning of avatars or Lord Krishnas authorised incarnations in the Vedic scriptures and answer these questions. Are avatars real or illusory?Under what circumstances do avatars manifest? What is the nature of the body the avatar assumes? Are all the avatars expanding from Lord Krishna? Are all the avatars omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent? Are all avatars transcendental to the cycle of birth and death? Are all avatars able to fulfill all desires? What is the time schedule which avatars manifest themselves? This was the purpose of this question so Lord Krishna would give an expose on these topics.
