After compiling the Vedic literature, Puranas, etc., Vyasadeva was still feeling unsatisfied. While thinking in this way Narada Muni reached the cottage of Vyasadeva and was asked about the cause of dissatisfaction. Narada Muni explained that because he (Vyasadeva) did not directly describe Krsna’s pastimes, and instead gave a license to enjoy sense gratification under religious principles, he was remaining unsatisfied. Narada then instructed Vyasadeva in the catur sloka, or catuhsloki (SB 2.9.33-36) the essence of the Veda. Vyasadeva took these four verses and expanded them to compile the Srimad Bhagavatam, which is known as the ripened fruit of Vedic literature because it directly describes Krsna’s transcendental pastimes.

This Bhagavata Purana is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Krsna to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the age of Kali shall get light from this Purana.
The verse cited from the Matsya Purana refers to the five characteristics of a Purana..
sargasca pratisargasca vamso manvantarani ca
vamsyanucaritaccaiva puranam pancalaksanam
“Creation, dissolution, genealogy, manvantaras and descriptions of the activities of famous kings, these are the five characteristics of a Purana.”..

“Lord Siva said: O beautiful lady, know that the Visnu, Narada, Bhagavata, Garuda, Padma and Varaha Puranas are sattvika; the Brahmanda, Brahma-vaivarta, Markandeya, Bhavisya, Vamana and Brahma Puranas are rajasika; and the Matsya, Kurma, Linga, Siva, Skanda and Agni Puranas are tamasika.”
..
The characteristics of Srimad Bhagavatam are given in the Matsya Purana (53.20-22),

“That which explains the topmost principles of religion, basing it on Gayatri, and which has the incident of the killing of Vrtrasura is to be known as the Srimad Bhagavatam. This Purana has eighteen thousand verses. Whoever makes a copy of the Srimad Bhagavatam and, placing it on a golden lion throne, donates it on the full moon day in the month of Bhadra (August-September), will attain the supreme goal.”
Quote from Garuda Purana in Hari-bhakti-vilasa 10.394-395:
artho’yam brahma sutranam bharatartha-vinirnayah gayatri bhasya rupo’sau vedartha paribrmhitah purananam sama rupah saksad bhagavatoditah dvadasa skandha yukto’yam sata viccheda samyutah grantho’stadasa sahasrah srimad bhagavatabhidam
“The Srimad Bhagavatam is the explanation of the Vedanta Sutra. It is the complete settlement of the Mahabharata. It is the complete commentary on the Gayatri mantra. It strengthens the explanation of the Vedas and is the topmost Purana, written by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It has twelve cantos, one hundred sections and eighteen thousand slokas.”

“I worship Him, the Original Lord, the reservoir of mercy, who is of the color of a tamala tree, who has descended to benefit all (suhitavataram). He is the Personality of the Bhagavatam, a bridge to cross over the ocean of the endless material existence. The First and Second Cantos are His two feet (padau); the Third and Fourth are said to be His thighs (uru); the Fifth Canto is His navel (nabhih); the Sixth Canto is His chest (bhujantaram); the other two [Seventh and Eighth] Cantos are His two arms (dor-yugalam); O King, the Ninth Canto is His neck (kanthah); the Tenth C anto is His blossomed lotus face (mukharavindam praphullam); the Eleventh Canto is His forehead (lalata-pattakam); and the Twelfth Canto shines as His crown (sirah).” (Padma Purana)

There is a famous vers..
aham vedmi suko vetti, vyaso vetti na vetti va
bhaktya bhagavatam grahyam, na buddhya na ca tikaya
Lord Siva said: “I know the meaning of the Bhagavat and I know that Sukadeva knows it also. But for Vyasadeva, he may or may not know it. The Bhagavat can only be known through bhakti, not by mundane intelligence or by reading many commentaries.”
There is another thread found here in connection with Lord Siva. Sambhu, Lord Siva, is one of the twelve Mahajanas.
svayambhur naradah sambhuh kumarah kapilo manuh
prahlado janako bhismo balir vaiyasakir vayam
Narada, Sambhu, and Vaiyasaki, or Sukadeva Gosvami, have got special connection with madhurya-rasa in Vrindavana. Sukadeva Gosvami was the suka, parrot of Srimati. Narada Muni got gopi-svarupa near Govardhan, and Lord Siva also got gopi-svarupa for dancing in rasa-lila.
Sk 3 . Ch 15 – Slokam 30
The Sanat Kumaras, the great Rishis were closest in attendance on the Lord. They were four in
number and all looked like five-year-old children. They could travel anywhere in the universe with
the speed of thought on missions of peace and goodwill. It happened that they were just on such a
mission and the same thought occurred to all of them . They said to each other, “Brothers, we have
been absent from our Lord too long; let us return.”
himself. This Daksha was the doyen of all the priests, performing elaborate rituals and sacrifices.
On one occasion all the priests and sages assembled together and performed a famous sacrifice.
Daksha , shining like the sun , entered there. Every one stood up in respect and awe except Brahma
and Rudra.
The latter became king and he had two wives Suniti and Suruchi. Suniti’s son was called
Dhruva and Suruchi’s son was Uthama.
to Madhuvana on the bank of the Yamuna as a place dear to the Lord. Then he gave a glorious description
of the Lord’s form and imparted the holy mantra,
“Om Namo Bhagavathe Narayanaya”
“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”
These mantras consisted of twelve syllables.

yagnas. He performed them so continuously that if the kusa grass used for it was laid end
to end, it would girdle the earth. He had twelve sons all alike and virtuous . The king asked them to
travel and meditate until they found Hari. They travelled due west and reached a lake near the sea
coast. They could hear a heavenly music. A gentle breeze wafted heavenly scents. And there emerged
from the lake the glorious form of Lord Siva, like a burnished statue of gold with shining face,
a bluish neck and a coiled serpent as necklace. With arms outstretched and one leg raised he was
dancing the cosmic dance.

numerous sacrifices – yagnas and kratus . During his rule all his subjects performed their duties as
enjoined by their nature so that no one was dissatisfied. All were contented and happy. As a result of
these yagnas and benign rule he became filled with boundless devotion towards Sree Hari. Dividing
Bharata Varsha among his sons he repaired to the forest for doing tapas. He reached Pulahasrama by
the side of which flows the river Gandaki also known as Chakranadi.

ranges in concentric rings and in between there are oceans of lime, milk and nectar. The rings of
mountains rise higher and higher and from there originate great rivers. Different people of various
hues and stature, gods and demigods; some golden and others dark or fair came to exist there . They
enjoyed heavenly pleasures without disease or old age and yet longed to be born in Bharatavarsha
(our country), because this is the karma bhumi where you can earn merit through actions and attain
the region from which you need not return. Then Suka Brahmam gives fascinating description of

It is time for us now to take a long look backwards. The story began with that master story teller
Sutha. reciting Bhagavatham to his brother sanyasins at Naimisaranyam, how Parikshit in a moment
of anger placed a dead snake on the shoulders of the great Angiras Maharshi who was in deep Tapas
and the unfortunate events that followed. One of the audience here interposed “O! Sutha Maharishi!
Why do even wise people commit such errors?” And Sutha replied, “O! Sages! It is all the work
Vishnumaya. The great Devi is ever on the prowl especially in this Kaliyuga. None can escape except
by the grace of Hari, her master. When she approaches a devotee completely immersed in Hari
without any reservation, she bows and gracefully withdraws. If she thinks “This person takes pride
in things unconnected with the soul, such as wealth position, fame etc” then maya knows there is no
truth in him. and casts her net.
..All the universes are clustered together up and down, and each and every one of them is separately sevenfold-covered. The watery portion is beyond the sevenfold coverings, and each covering is ten times more expansive than the previous covering.
The extent of the cosmic phenomenon is calculated to be diametrically (both ways) four billion miles. Then the coverings of the universe begin. The first stratum of the covering (earth) is calculated to extend eighty million miles, and the subsequent coverings of the universe are respectively of fire, effulgence, air and ether, one after another, each extending ten times further than the previous.1 yojan = 8 miles = 12,8 km
Dhruvaloka, the polestar, is 3,800,000 yojanas above the sun. Above Dhruvaloka by 10,000,000 yojanas is Maharloka, above Maharloka by 20,000,000 yojanas is Janaloka, above Janaloka by 80,000,000 yojanas is Tapoloka, and above Tapoloka by 120,000,000 yojanas is Satyaloka. Thus the distance from the sun to Satyaloka is 233,800,000 yojanas, or 1,870,400,000 miles. The Vaikuntha planets begin 26,200,000 yojanas (209,600,000 miles) above Satyaloka. Thus the Visnu Purana describes that the covering of the universe is 260,000,000 yojanas (2,080,000,000 miles) away from the sun
The moon is situated 100,000 yojanas above the rays of the sunshine. Day and night on the heavenly planets and Pitrloka are calculated according to its waning and waxing. Above the moon by a distance of 200,000 yojanas are some stars, and above these stars is Sukra-graha (Venus), whose influence is always auspicious for the inhabitants of the entire universe. Above Sukra-graha by 200,000 yojanas is Budha-graha (Mercury), whose influence is sometimes auspicious and sometimes inauspicious. Next, above Budha-graha by 200,000 yojanas, is Angaraka (Mars), which almost always has an unfavorable influence. Above Angaraka by another 200,000 yojanas is the planet called Brhaspati-graha (Jupiter), which is always very favorable for qualified brahmanas. Above Brhaspati-graha is the planet Sanaiscara (Saturn), which is very inauspicious, and above Saturn is a group of seven stars occupied by great saintly persons who are always thinking of the welfare of the entire universe. These seven stars circumambulate Dhruvaloka, which is the residence of Lord Visnu within this universe
Rahu is situated 10,000 yojanas below the sun. Below Rahu by another 10,000 yojanas are the planets of the Siddhas, Caranas and Vidyadharas, and below these are planets such as Yaksaloka and Raksaloka. Below these planets is the earth, and 70,000 yojanas below the earth are the lower planetary systems Bila-svarga: Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala and Patala. Demons and Raksasas live in these lower planetary systems with their wives and children, always engaged in sense gratification and not fearing their next births. The sunshine does not reach these planets, but they are illuminated by jewels fixed upon the hoods of snakes
Below Talatala is the planet Mahatala, where there are many snakes with hundreds and thousands of hoods. Below Mahatala is Rasatala, and below that is Patala (Nagaloka), where the serpent Vasuki lives with his associates
Approximately 240,000 miles beneath the planet Patala lives Lord Ananta. This great universe, situated on one of Lord Anantadeva’s thousands of hoods, appears just like a white mustard seed. It is infinitesimal compared to the hood of Lord Ananta
The distance from the sun to the earth is lower planetary systems called Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala and Patala. Below these lower planets by 30,000 yojanas, Sesa Naga is lying on the Garbhodaka Ocean. That ocean is 249,800,000 yojanas deep. Thus the total diameter of the universe is approximately 500,000,000 yojanas, or 4,000,000,000 miles
Bhurloka, or Bhu-mandala is the earthly level consisting of seven spheres (dvipas) – Jambudvipa, Plaksadvipa, Salmalidvipa, Kusadvipa, Krauncadvipa, Sakadvipa, Puskaradvipa – which are inhabited by various human beings.
“The planetary system known as Bhu-mandala resembles a lotus flower, and its seven islands resemble the whorl of that flower. The length and breadth of the island known as Jambudvipa, which is situated in the middle of the whorl, are one million yojanas [eight million miles]. Jambudvipa is round like the leaf of a lotus flower.”
